A fossil resin from an extinct variety of pine tree found primarily in the Baltic States. Amber is found as a brittle yellow, amber, or reddish-brown translucent substance that is soluble in ether and chloroform. When the dissolved resin is mixed with alcohol, it makes a varnish used for collodion images.[1]
